Profyle.at was envisioned one night by Colin Dean as he lay awake in bed during his graduate school years. He longed for a way to unite all of his various social networking and bookmarking profiles on a single page so that he could give that single URL to people when they want to find him on any given social site. The next morning, he woke up and made a page on his WordPress blog, devoting several hours to assembling most of his personal profile URLs and writing a short description of his usage of each.

He vowed to find a way to make such a thing easier for users who didn't have a web site, or didn't have the technical know-how to do it on their own.

Jon Daniel and Colin had been friends for many years through the Pittsburgh LAN party scene. Colin described his idea to Jon a few weeks later, and Jon went home and coded much of the redirection engine.

There the code sat for several months.

In brisk October 2009, a mutual friend of the duo indicated that he'd been fortunate enough to find funding through an organization called AlphaLab, a non-profit tech startup incubator and subsidiary of Pittsburgh tech funding powerhouse Innovation Works. Our heroes applied, resolving to continue whether or not they received the funding. They didn't, but they continued on, hoping that others would see the value of the concept of a personal profile directory...
